Lager

Carl A. Lager, Ph. D.
Gevirtz School of Education
University of California, Santa Barbara

With a B.S. in Applied Mathematics, Dr. Carl Lager taught English learners (ELs) for six years in Los Angeles Unified School District. He earned his teaching credential (Secondary Mathematics), M.Ed., and Bilingual CLAD credential, and then his Ph.D. in Education from UCLA. After receiving his Ph.D., he moved to Vermont to effect change for New England’s students (ELs and non-ELs alike) in mathematics instruction and assessment on multiple levels. As the Mathematics Assessment Coordinator for the Vermont Department of Education, he brought EL needs to the fore when crafting large-scale assessment policies and reviewing large-scale mathematics items. Currently an assistant professor in the Gevirtz School of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), Carl teaches courses for STEM undergraduates in UCSB's Science Mathematics Initiative (SMI) minor, secondary mathematics credential candidates, and doctoral students in the university's Mathematics Education Specialization. He serves as an Editorial Panel member for NCTM’s Mathematics Teacher and as a member of the Research and Publications Committee for TODOS: Mathematics For All. Carl wants to help CAMTE grow its membership base, expand and amplify its policymaking influence throughout California, and be the best AMTE affiliate possible. Carl's past CAMTE contributions include an article in CAMTE's first Monograph and serving on the 2008 Nominations and Elections committee.
